SkillsLoop LTD – Safeguarding & Child Protection Policy

 

1. Policy Statement

SkillsLoop LTD is committed to providing a safe, positive, and supportive environment for all children and young people who take part in our activities.

  • We believe that the welfare of the child is paramount.

  • Every child, regardless of age, ability, gender, race, religion, or background, has the right to enjoy mountain biking free from harm, abuse, or exploitation.

  • All coaches, volunteers, and staff share the responsibility for safeguarding.


 

2. Aims of This Policy

  • To protect children and young people who take part in SkillsLoop sessions.

  • To provide coaches and staff with clear guidance on best practice and procedures.

  • To ensure parents/guardians understand our safeguarding approach and their role in supporting it.


 

3. Definitions

  • Child/Young Person – anyone under 18 years old.

  • Safeguarding – protecting children from maltreatment, preventing harm, ensuring safe care, and creating opportunities for the best outcomes.

  • DSL (Designated Safeguarding Lead) – the named person responsible for safeguarding within SkillsLoop LTD.

 


 

4. Responsibilities

    • Complete an enhanced DBS check and Safeguarding Training.

    • Follow the SkillsLoop Code of Conduct.

    • Report any safeguarding concerns immediately to the DSL.

      All coaches and staff will:

       

    • Provide emergency contact and medical details.

    • Ensure children have appropriate equipment and clothing.

    • Be contactable during sessions.

      Parents/guardians will:

       

  • The DSL will:

    • Act as first point of contact for concerns.

    • Ensure safeguarding records are kept securely.

    • Liaise with statutory agencies if necessary.

     


 

5. Safe Coaching Practice

  • Ratios: Maximum of 6 riders per coach for Junior Academy sessions.

  • Supervision: Coaches will avoid being alone with a child. Where 1:1 instruction is needed, it will take place in view of others.

  • Communication: No direct personal contact with children via social media, messaging, or phone. All communication goes through parents/guardians.

  • Transport: Coaches will not give children lifts unless pre-approved in writing by a parent and with another adult present.

  • Photography/Video: Consent must be obtained from parents/guardians before capturing or using images.


 

6. Recognising & Responding to Concerns

  • Coaches will remain vigilant to signs of abuse, neglect, or exploitation.

  • Concerns should be reported to the DSL immediately.

  • If a child is at immediate risk of harm, staff must contact emergency services (999) and inform the DSL.

  • All concerns will be logged and, if appropriate, referred to local safeguarding authorities.


 

7. Reporting Procedure

  1. Coach/volunteer identifies concern.

  2. Concern reported to DSL as soon as possible.

  3. DSL assesses and logs concern.

  4. DSL takes appropriate action – may include contacting parents (unless this places the child at greater risk) or referring to statutory services.


 

8. Review & Training

  • This policy will be reviewed annually.
